James W. Ashley, ’87 is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera Science Operations Center with the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University. Ashley received a Bachelor of Science in geology from Grand Valley in 1987 and went on to receive a master’s degree in geology from Michigan State University in 1995, and a Ph.D. studying planetary remote sensing geophysics from Arizona State University in 2011. Ashley has worked as a laboratory instructor, an adjunct professor, and a Senior Research Assistant at the Annis Water Resources Institute. From 1990 to 2004, Ashley served as a full time Hydrogeologist and Project Manager at various environmental consulting firms in Michigan and Arizona. Throughout 15 years on the job he worked to assess and/or remediate more than 250 contaminated industrial and commercial sites across the United States. While much of his career has been focused on consulting, his primary interest is the study of asteroids and meteorites which have fallen to Earth and other planets. He has presented his findings dozens of times at professional conferences and workshops, and enjoys sharing his research with the public through schools, museums, planetariums and corporate gatherings. Ashley’s work has been published in more than 45 abstracts and peer-reviewed articles, and his list of awards and certifications is nearly as long. One of his most notable research documents was published in the Journal of Geophysical Research regarding meteorites found on Mars. Ashley received the Project Manager of the Year Award from Shell Oil Products U.S., The Planetary Society Shoemaker NEO Grant Award, and is a member of the American Association of Professional Geologists, the American Geophysical Union, and The Meteoritical Society. James currently resides in Phoenix Arizona. He and his wife Mary are expecting their first baby. |
Lakers Giving Time + Talent = Community Outreach Week 2012
Lakers have a heart for their communities, and it shows. Hundreds of Grand Valley alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends participated in Community Outreach Week 2012. The annual week-long event is aimed at uniting Lakers from around the world in service. Projects were hosted from San Francisco to New York City and in between. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves and logged more than 1,000 hours at events from March 26-31. Projects were also hosted as far away as Africa, Jamaica and New Foundland. The Alumni Association will induct two more recipients into its prestigious group of award winners this month. James Ashley, Ph.D., '87 will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award and Professor Star Swift, J.D. and M.L.I.R. will receive the Outstanding Educator Award at a recognition dinner on April 27. More than 25 Tampa area Alumni and friends gathered with Tampa Club Leader Tara Crow, ’97 to cheer on the Detroit Tigers at the Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida. Grand Valley State senior Aaron Beebe claimed the first National Championship for the swimming program in the 200 IM on March 14 at the NCAA Division II National Championship meet. The countdown to the GVSU Football season has officially started. The September 8, 2012 home opener will mark the beginning of a new chapter for college football in West Michigan. The modern update of Lubbers Stadium has been designed for to ehance the Laker Football Fan experience with more than 2,000 additional seats from which to watch the game. The GVSU Rowing Team will compete in the 2012 Mid-American Collegiate Rowing Association (MACRA) Championship Regatta on April 28, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wear Laker colors, bring friends, and show your laker pride by cheering for your alma mater at Riverside Park. Volunteers are needed to house crew members the night before the regatta and host team dinner that evening.
